How to Get More Leads & Sales From Your Web Site
Preview of talk to
be given at :
Your
Marketing IS Your Business workshop on April 10, 2010 (Saturday) in Deerfield.
If you have, or plan to have a WEB SITE, do you know:
- What colors and sizes of buttons generate the highest conversion rate?
- What 1 thing can you place on your order form page to increase sales
by 28%?
- The Best Location on a Web Page to Put Your Opt-In Box?
- What’s the Best Headline Color for a Web Page?
- 1 Simple Trick to Get 12% More People to Scroll Down on a Web Page?
If not, then you probably aren’t getting all the leads and/or sales you
can out of your Web site.
For probably 90% of businesses, if you are not actively generating leads
(for service-type businesses) or sales (for product-type businesses) from
your Web site, or think you should be but the site isn’t performing the way
you would like, then there is almost certainly a definitive reason this is
the case.
Simply put, your Web site is not optimized to maximize CONVERSIONS. A conversion
is any type of action you want someone to take such as when a:
- Visitor makes a purchase.
- Visitor completes a listing inquiry form.
- Visitor downloads a free report and registers.
- Visitor signs up for your free e-Newsletter.
The biggest issue I find when consulting with business owners and managers
regarding their web site is that it was either self-designed or created by
a “techie”. Your Web site is a marketing and sales vehicle (or should be).
It should NOT be merely an informational vehicle. Your Web site’s purpose
is not merely to give them “information”, nor should it be to get them to
come back or to give them lots of choices or to make them stay there for
as long as possible. So it’s vital that you have involvement from true marketers
on your site’s design, copy and positioning of key elements in your sales
conversion process.
Ultimately, the purpose of your Web site should be to get people to take
the action you want them to take. Period. That action is your “M.D.A.” –
Most Desired Action. For an eCommerce site, it’s to get someone to make
an online purchase. For service businesses, typically it’s to generate a
lead so the purpose is to get someone to complete a free consultation form
or free quote, etc.
From there, everything your site says, how the information is presented,
what is presented, the position of things on the page, etc. etc. should be
laser focused on maximizing the chances a visitor will perform your MDA.
And small things can make a big difference, especially if you have a lot
of traffic coming to your Web site. For example, I own a web site that in
March received about 27,000 unique visitors (not “hits”, but actual visitors)
to the site. Whenever you see stats like this, keep in mind the reality is
probably 5% of them are the same people, just visiting from a different computer
or location, so even the phrase “unique visitors” isn’t perfectly accurate.
So I estimate that 25,000 were truly unique. This could be off slightly but
close enough. In March, we had a conversion rate of about 1.7% which translates
to about 425 sales.
What if we made a few little changes to the web site and kept all our marketing
exactly the same (not spending even one red cent on marketing) and that increased
our conversion rate just 0.2% more than what it was? That would mean 50 more
sales! And those sales cost us nothing but the cost to tweak the site by
paying a Web developer one time, yet we reap the benefits over and over,
month after month.
BUT, what to change? What can make a positive difference in conversion rate?
A couple quick things:
- “Add To Cart” tends to perform better than “Buy Now” for your purchase
button
- Orange buttons tends to perform better than Red buttons
- Having “Credibility Indicators” (like the BBBonline or a secure shopping
logo) near your buy button tends to increase conversions.
- Putting a testimonial in the right place on a page can increase conversions.
- And these are just to name a few easy changes….
If what I’m sharing with you in this article has piqued your interest and
you have a Web site you’d like to see do more for you than what it currently
is doing, then I highly recommend attending this Saturday’s full day workshop
“Your Marketing IS Your Business” on April 10, 2010 at the Deerfield Hilton.
I’m just a speaker at it and not the organizer but the program they have
for this event is excellent. I’ll be providing a lot more detail than in
this short article, plus things like Effective Calls to Action & Understanding
"Visitor Dispositions", Critical Components of Your Conversion
Sequence, Simple Things to Lower the Cost of Traffic to Your Site and more.
