How to Gauge Demand For New Products, Services & Businesses
Before You Even Create Them

Are you an “idea generator”? Do you wonder whether your ideas have any
potential or do you have so many ideas you don’t know which ones are the
best to pursue? Do you think trying to turn your ideas into revenue has
to take a long time?
Everyone gets ideas but not everyone takes action on them, even if that
action is just a few minutes of initial research. The result is “Idea Death”,
a condition that can be quite costly when that idea was a winning lottery
ticket you never checked the numbers for.
Technology and recent online tools now make it faster and easier for people
with ideas for new products, services and entirely new businesses to launch,
test and market their ideas quickly and inexpensively (meaning in under 24
hours for under a hundred bucks or so).
I do seminars around South Florida entitled “How to Turn an Idea Into a
Business in 1 Day”. These seminars, which are now sponsored by the Broward
County Chamber of Commerce, show you little known tools to very quickly gauge
actual demand for a service, product or new business concept that you may
be thinking about pursuing and how to actually launch and market them without
the time and costs of doing it the “old” way.
An excellent tool you can use to gauge demand is a “keyword volume and generation”
tool. Google has one called the “Adwords External Keyword Tool” (enter this
phrase in Google and click on the link that appears for it), and you can
use it to see how many people are searching each month for what you might
want to sell. Note how I said “MIGHT want to sell”. All too often I see
both new and even experienced entrepreneurs invest money into a venture or
idea without having actually sold even one solitary customer. This is completely
unnecessary with the tools available today.
In this economy, we can’t afford to take big financial risks. That’s why
I advocate the age-old concept of “looking before leaping” and for you to
stay in what I call the “low risk zone.” The low risk zone means you invest
only minimal time and minimal money to see if there’s any interest in your
idea. If you get some nibbles, then you fish some more. If you don’t, you
change your bait or move to another fishing spot, or choose another place
altogether if it’s an empty lake.
For example, if you are a business owner who had 2 different ideas for a
new product line, but needed to choose only one path forward, you could use
this keyword tool to see which one has the most people searching for what
you are thinking about selling (referred to as “search volume”). This would
give you a very good idea of which idea has the most demand right now, in
what essentially is real time.
There are numerous free web site creation tools that take only a few hours
to launch a new site to sell that new product or service you just thought
of and researched only hours before. And before you think you aren’t a web
developer, the web site creation tool we use at our weekend workshop is “so
easy a caveman can do it”.
Then, by using Google Adwords’ Pay Per Click
(PPC) advertising, you can literally be on the first page of the search engine
results page for some of the keywords that describe your product or service
idea so you can generate leads or sales immediately, not in days, weeks or
months.
So a potential customer searches online, sees your ad, clicks on it, views
your newly created free web site (call this a “test site” for now), the user
takes an action (calls you or completes a lead form) and BAM! you’ve just
determined that someone actually has an interest in what you’re selling (or
you may actually close the lead into a sale…even better!) This all can
be done literally in under 8 hours for under a hundred dollars. Seriously.
Of course, you might just hear crickets because you either are getting no
clicks (because the market isn’t interested in your proposed/new product
or service), or they are clicking but not actually taking any action on your
site. In either case, you at least now have some new information relating
to the demand (or lack thereof) for your concept.
Since I only have so much space in this article, the above is a bit of a
simplification but not all that much. The example also assumes your ad and
test web site are not overly flawed in some way but the bottom line is that
technology and these new online tools can help you explore and exploit new
sources of revenue for yourself or your business faster and cheaper than
you ever thought possible.
